Jannette Alexander Scholarship Recipients - 2023

Kianni Albrecht

My name is Kianni Albrecht and I am attending my Master of Social Work Program at California State University, San Marcos. This program has provided me the safe and empowering space to engage in the critical exploration of the needs of diverse populations, the social systems that impact the communities that we serve, and my own experiences, biases and needs that have the power to influence the work that I do with others. The culmination of this experience has equipped me with a framework of curiosity, empathy and hope that I commit to provide the highest quality supportive services that I can. Overall, I know that the future only holds more opportunities for learning and growth, and I am ecstatic to have California Society for Clinical Social Work as a resource to gain high level of clinical training and education, ethical guidance and opportunities for advocacy.

Cheery Huan

My name is Cheery Huang and I am in my final year at UC Berkeley’s Master of Social Welfare program. I received my B.A. in Sociology from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. During my undergraduate career, I studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina to study Public Health in Urban Environments and in Merida, Mexico. My research interests are on race, ethnicity, diaspora, ethnic identities, ethnic enclaves, public health, racial health disparities, inequities, and well-being, especially in low-income immigrant communities. I presented my research at my school’s Spring Colloquium, Celebration, and Eastern Sociological Society. After graduating, I am excited to be home on the west coast to give back to my community.  Inspired by Jannette Alexander, I hope to advance social work by finding ways within my community to deepen my understanding of the ways that mental health is as important as physical health for well-being. I want to empower their voices and, with them, make meaningful, societal changes as a bilingual social worker, especially, during these unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of Asian Hate Crimes, the mental health field is crucial to help provide support and ensure safety. My goal is to educate, with cultural competence, populations unfamiliar with or unaccepting of psychosocial issues and help them conquer the stigma attached to mental distress and crises.
