To grow up with the dynamics of loss, be it from living with addiction, violence or simply unavailable parents creates a legacy of internalized toxic shame, a consequence of traumatic stress. Claudia will talk about traumas common to impaired families in general, and specifically in families affected by addiction. The ultimate consequence to living with various forms of abandonment tells people they are not of value, resulting in toxic shame messages. Claudia will then identify and address shame screens such as victimization, perfectionism, rage, procrastination, and control that are common to mental health, addiction, and intimacy disorders.
