Amber McKinney practices clinical social work with experience in individual, family and group therapy. She's trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Seeking Safety, Motivational Interviewing and more.
Amber began her mental health profession as a career counselor for foster youth in San Diego and followed up with a position as a child counselor at Ve & Daughter's Happy Home. She also expanded her experience by providing recreational therapy to individuals ranging from three to 60-years-old with various mental, emotional and physical disabilities for the City of San Diego.
Amber gained experience as a behavioral health assistant at Rady Hospital's Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit, Rose Pavilion, Acute Care and more. Shortly after, Amber became knowledgable of ICD-10 codes and healthcare coverage at Dexcom.
During the course of graduate school, Amber has worked as a clinical social work intern and as a case manager at Father Joe's Villages. Shortly after, Amber practiced individual and family therapy with child and adolescent clients at Pathways by Molina's Cornerstone agency.
Upon graduating with her Master of Social Work, Amber resumed working with those experiencing homelessness at San Diego Youth Services' TAY (Transitional Aged Youth) Academy. Here Amber provided various services to youth ages 14-25 experiencing or at-risk of homelessness.
Concurrently, Amber served the adult population experiencing serious mental illness (SMI) at Community Research Foundation’s urgent psychiatric medication clinic, Jane Westin Center. Here, she gained experience in providing clinical assessment and diagnosis.
Since then, Amber’s been promoted to Program Coordinator of TAY Academy, further expanding on her experience in management and administration.
Concurrently, Amber is operating her self-named private practice offering individual telehealth services including EMDR. Amber will soon be accepting insurance, but until then remains cash pay.
