Carl Peralta 01:15 PM

If you are working at two different sites and the sites are not part of the same agency or company, you will need supervision for each site.  The same supervisor can supervise at both sites as the sites allow it.

Janet Yuen 01:17 PM

How many attempts do we have to take the Ca Law & Ethics exam? What happens if we don't pass?

Carl Peralta 01:18 PM

Once you have a registration, you will need to attempt the Law and Ethics each year in order to renew it.  As long as you attempt the exam, even if you do not pass it, you will be able to renew your registration.  Once you pass the exam, you will not have to take it again.

Anonymous Attendee 01:18 PM

I have heard that some people have successfully submitted their applications where they did 1 unit of supervision for every 10 "A1" hours, while some interpret it as 1 unit of supervision is required for every 10 "A" hours. Can you please clarify which is correct?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:19 PM

You  need one unit of supervision for 10 hour of face to face contact. If you have more, then you need two hours of supervision units for 20 hours of client contact.

Carl Peralta 01:20 PM

The requirement for supervision is 1 unit (1 hour of individual or triadic supervision or 2 hours of group supervision) for the first 10 hours of clinical experience claimed in a week.  For any clinical experience more than 10 hours, an extra unit of supervision is required.

Gavin Sweeney 01:18 PM

When folks pay out of pocket for supervision when not provided at their employment site, how does this typically work? What are the rules as well as some considerations for this kind of arrangement?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:21 PM

There are forms on the BBS website for supervsion agreements. Regulations for supervision are also posted on this link. https://www.bbs.ca.gov/licensees/supervisor.html

Fred Mathis 01:19 PM

How do I know if the courses required for licensure taken by a CE provider meets BBS requirements? Do course offerings have to meet the exact verbiage as listed on your website? For instance, I am having difficulty finding a course that mirrors the course requirement : Alcoholism and Other Chemical Substance Abuse and Dependency

Carl Peralta 01:22 PM

Coursework providers can be found through any Board CE provider approval agency, and a list of agencies is listed on the Board's website.

Bri Mendoza (she/they) 01:19 PM

What is the earliest you can take the background check? (I won’t be graduating until the end of August but would like to get it done by June if possible)

Carl Peralta 01:24 PM

It is recommended you do your Live Scan around the time you are ready to submit your registration application to the Board.  Live Scan results are held in our database no more than 60 days from the date of receipt.

Anonymous Attendee 01:20 PM

If we don’t pass the exam the first time, once we do pass and get licensure and it is time to renew licensure, would we need to take the law and ethics exam again?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:22 PM

No, you only take the law and ethics once. You have required continuing education in law and ethics once you get licensed.

Anonymous Attendee 01:20 PM

So that would mean 10 "A" hours?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:23 PM

Yes, 10 hours face to face

Donna Humphrey (She, Her, Hers) 01:21 PM

What about for Veterans who are applying for registration after graduation, is there an expedited process?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:24 PM

Yes, your application would be expedited.

Jodi Schenck 01:21 PM

Can an LMFT supervise all of your hours?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:24 PM

No, specific number of hours need to be done by an LCSW.

Anonymous Attendee 01:21 PM

Hi, I will be taking the Law and Ethics for the 3rd time, do I retake the CE Law and Ethics (3) units? I took it last year but need clarification on whether I have to take it again (the 3 unit) or take the 6 units?

Carl Peralta 01:25 PM

The 3 hours of law and ethics is required each year and is part of the registration renewal process.

Vanessa (she/her) 01:24 PM

How different is the process for LPCC? I know the requirements are different, but I'm wondering if there's a reason LPCC isn't covered as part of today's session - perhaps because the process differs significantly?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:26 PM

Follow this link for requirements for LPCC. https://www.bbs.ca.gov/applicants/lpcc.html

Carl Peralta 01:27 PM

LMFT and LPCC are completely different license types and have different education and experience requirements.  BBS was asked to provide a presentation on LCSW requirements today.  For more information about LPCC requirements, please visti the Board's website.

Anonymous Attendee 01:25 PM

Hello, are there scholarships or other financial assistance programs that can assist with covering the costs of obtaining licensure?

Carl Peralta 01:28 PM

The Board does not interface with entities offering scholarships or other financial assistance, so unfortunately, we cannot help you find those resources.

Lisa 01:25 PM

How many CEUs need to be completed before taking the Law and Ethics exam for your ACSW. And what are the main CEU trainings that will count?

Carl Peralta 01:30 PM

The Law and Ethics exam is part of the registration renewal process, and 3 hours of continuing education in Law and Ethics is required at the time of renewal.

vanessa Covarrubias 01:26 PM

should we wait to apply until we gain our official transcripts ?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:28 PM

You can apply close to graduation and have the official transcript forwarded when ready.

Bri Mendoza (she/they) 01:27 PM

Thank you! For clarification, I will be out of state until graduation, is it possible to take the Live Scan in a different state or does it need to be done in CA? And is there a list of places to get our Live Scan done?

Carl Peralta 01:31 PM

The Live Scan can only be done in California.  If you choose to do fingerprints while you are out of state, you will need to request fingerprint hard cards from the Board.  The email address for that is BBS.Fingerprint@dca.ca.gov.

Gavin Sweeney 01:27 PM

To clarify a previous question: 1 hour of individual supervision is required for the first 10 hours of FTF experience claimed in a week. A 2nd hour of individual supervision is needed for any hours claimed in excess of that? (i.e. if you have 30 hours of FTF experience in a week, you would need 2 hours of individual supervision?)

Sarah Jayyousi 01:30 PM

Correct, additionally two hours of group supervision can count as one unit of supervision

Jose Valencia 01:27 PM

How many weeks of supervision are needed for licensure?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:30 PM

104 weeks, full two years.

Anonymous Attendee 01:27 PM

When can we get an Associate registration number?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:31 PM

Yes, once you register as an ASW, you will get an ASW number

Leslie L 01:27 PM

Will you be discussing the licensure process if you are licensed in another state?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:31 PM

No, we only deal with CA license. You need to contact that state.

Rashmi Pattarkine 01:27 PM

I have done my MSW from India, Can i register for ASW?

Carl Peralta 01:32 PM

The Board does not pre-evaluate, but you are welcome to review the education requirements for LCSW licensure, and if you believe your MSW program qualifies, you are welcome to apply.

Anonymous Attendee 01:27 PM

With protest camps happening on our campus our students would like to know:  Does arrest for participation in protests impact eligibility for licensure?

Carl Peralta 01:34 PM

The Board does not pre-evaluate.  If you have a background issue of some sort, it will be reviewed by the Enforcement Unit and a determination will be made at the time of application.  Most prior convictions do not impact an applicant's eligibility for licensure.

Anonymous Attendee 01:27 PM

What's the maximum amount of times someone can attempt to take the California Law & Ethics exam?

Carl Peralta 01:34 PM

There is no limit.

Anonymous Attendee 01:28 PM

I know folks who have been told to submit their ASW application as they await transcripts due to processing time and upload transcripts to submitted application once they’re available. Is this ill advised?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:32 PM

Yes, you can submit your applications but I advise you to do it closer to graduation. Once the transcripts post, you can request for the school to electroncially send them to the BBS.

Anonymous Attendee 01:29 PM

How many hours must be supervised by an LCSW?

Carl Peralta 01:35 PM

A minimum of 1,700 hours must be supervised by an LCSW.  Up to 1,300 hours can be supervised by other license types.

Anonymous Attendee 01:30 PM

What was step #7? I missed it

Anonymous Attendee 01:30 PM

I was registered with BBS awhile back and gained some supervision hours but they have since expired. I want to register again but do I have to take the law & ethics exam before I can register?

Carl Peralta 01:36 PM

If your previous registration is cancelled and you have not already passed the Law and Ethics Exam, you will need to pass it before the Board can issue you a new number.

Anonymous Attendee 01:30 PM

Can the 3 hours of law and ethics required for registration renewal also be a 3 hour telehealth law and ethics course?

Carl Peralta 01:37 PM

Yes, the 3 hour law and ethics course can also cover telehealth requirements.

Anonymous Attendee 01:30 PM

If you've taken the additional coursework courses in grad school, graduated in 2009, do you need to do additonal CEUs of the additional coursework to be covered?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:40 PM

If you ahve taken the additional coursework, you do not need to retake. Just submit proof.

Gavin Sweeney 01:31 PM

Can you define what is meant by “professional corporation”?

Carl Peralta 01:38 PM

The basic definition of professional association is covered in the law.  For more specific information, though, it is recommended you reach out to your professional association: NASW-CA.

Rachelle Tuck 01:31 PM

I am the first MSW hired by a Tribal nonprofit that is not approved YET for the DOJ livescan process. 90 day rule states to count those hours I need a live scan. Do you know how long it takes for an organization to get certified with the DOJ?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:35 PM

I do not know their process.

Margaret Hoyum 01:31 PM

Can the 90 day rule apply if you are returning to a job that you are already employed at?

Carl Peralta 01:39 PM

Yes, you can earn hours at a site where you were previously employed.

Rebecca Goodman 01:31 PM

Can we still collect supervision hours from a private practice once we get our ASW even if they do not count for the 90-day rule?

Carl Peralta 01:40 PM

Once you are registered with the Board, you may earn hours in a private practice.

Sharon Lau (she/her) 01:32 PM

Regarding the 90 day rule, what if i started working during that 90 day period after my conferral date but it took the BBS over 90 days to process my application and assign me a associate registration number?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:36 PM

If the employer required a live scan, you can count the hours during the 90 days the BBS is processing your application.

Alyssa Bacon-Liu 01:32 PM

What is the current wait time to receive your ASW number after submitting your registration? I'm hearing anywhere from 3-8 months from other MSW's. Is there anything we can do to ensure our registration is processed in a timely manner?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:39 PM

The best way to find this is on the BBS facebook page. It gives you up to date info

Bri Mendoza (she/they) 01:32 PM

Thank you!

Sarah Jayyousi 01:36 PM

.

Leslie L 01:33 PM

I am licensed in another state and have moved to CA. I am looking to be licensed in CA and wonder if you can direct me to information about this.

Sarah Jayyousi 01:38 PM

https://www.bbs.ca.gov/licensees/index.html. Go this site and it has the application.

Leah Pickar 01:33 PM

Can you clarify- you have to take the law and ethics exam *each* year of being an ASW/ AMFT? Or just once at the 1-year mark?

Carl Peralta 01:41 PM

To renew your registration, you will need to attempt the Law and Ethics Exam at least once a year, but you can take it more often if you wish to.

Anonymous Attendee 01:33 PM

Can you define professional corporation? Would working for a health insurance (Kaiser for example) be considered a professional coporation?

Carl Peralta 01:43 PM

There are parts of the Kaiser system that are considered are considered to be a professional corporation, and there are other parts of it that are not.  Please be aware, it is an employer's responsibility to know what their status is.  The Board, unfortunately, does not verify sites.

Norma Miller 01:34 PM

If all 3000 hours are not accumulated within the first year, do hours fall off one year at a time at the 6-year mark after application, or do you lose one year at a time?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:40 PM

Hours don't fall off unless you exceed 6 years.

Vanessa Giron 01:34 PM

will the BBS be moving towards online application & document submission in the near future?

Carl Peralta 01:44 PM

Yes, the Board is already working on a system to submit registration applications on line.

Bri Mendoza (she/they) 01:34 PM

My understanding is that we have to take the Law and Ethics exam after we have done the 3,000 hours. From this slide, it looks like we need to take the Law & Ethics exam every year that we have an ACSW number until we apply for the LCSW. Is this the correct understanding?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:41 PM

No, you can take law and ethics as soon as you get registered.

Kim Porter 01:35 PM

If you have been offered a job with the agency that you are interning at, does the Live Scan have to be current within the 90 day timeframe of BBS Application or can the Live Scan I haad to do back in Augusst of 2023 be used to count hours right away?

Carl Peralta 01:45 PM

The law requires applicants complete a Live Scan for their employer as part of the 90-Day Rule.  If you did a Live Scan at any time for the employer, even if it is more than a year old, it will still meet the requirements of the law.

Mallory MacInnis ~ MFT Trainee 01:35 PM

You mention applying close to graduation and sending sending transcripts later. How close do you reccommend?

Carl Peralta 01:46 PM

The Board recommends registration applications and corresponding transcripts be submitted at the same time.

Anonymous Attendee 01:35 PM

Re: “Yes, you can submit your applications but I advise you to do it closer to graduation. Once the transcripts post, you can request for the school to electroncially send them to the BBS.”

Does this mean we can apply for ASW even before our degrees are conferred? How soon can we apply from our graduation date?

Carl Peralta 01:54 PM

The Board recommends you apply for a registration after your degree has been conferred.

Anonymous Attendee 01:35 PM

Can the six year rule be extended?

Carl Peralta 01:47 PM

The law does not allow for an extension of the Six Year Rule unfortunately.

Anonymous Attendee 01:35 PM

Finishing my hours in the next couple of weeks; hoping to take my test prior to my 6 years which is this October. If I don’t pass, do I have to get a subsequent number still?

Carl Peralta 01:50 PM

Whether you need a new registration number or not will depend on specific circumstances.  In general, a registration may be needed for employment purposes or to continue gaining hours.

Anonymous Attendee 01:36 PM

if we went to a CSWE accredited school in CA is the additional coursework required for LCSW licensure (mandated reporting, substance use, human sexuality, etc) covered? or do we need to take all those classes elsewhere before applying for LCSW?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:50 PM

not all schools meet all requirements. I suggest you get a letter from your MSW program and take whatever they did not cover. there are recent ones related to telehealth.

Erica Robinson 01:36 PM

Once the application is open, can hours start?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:44 PM

hours can start as soon as you get the ASW number unless you meet the 90 day rule requirement.

Anonymous Attendee 01:36 PM

Is there a breakdown of how many hours are required within the 3000 hours? like 1750 for face to face, etc.?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:45 PM

Breakdown is on the following link https://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/forms/lcs/lcs-exp.pdf

T Rubio 01:37 PM

The BBS clarified in Oct 2023 that the extra hour of supervision is needed for anything in the “clinical hours” section (the 2000 hour req). The majority of the work social workers do at the VA is clinical case management, not the 50-minute therapy session.  Does this mean that all supervises should receive an extra individual/triadic or group session each week? I’m curious how this is even humanly possible for any agency where there is never enough LCSWs doing supervision.

Carl Peralta 01:53 PM

The Board does not determine which hours an Associate can claim or how they are to be recorded.  That is the supervisor's responsibility.  So, depending on how your supervisor directs you to record your hours, additional supervision may or may not be required.

Anonymous Attendee 01:37 PM

If you have exemption for backgroud, do you still need to do finger print?

Carl Peralta 01:58 PM

All applicants are required to complete fingerprints for the Board.

Anonymous Attendee 01:37 PM

Hello,

Will we have access to this recording to go back and reference if needed?

This question has been answered live

Anonymous Attendee 01:38 PM

So we have to wait till we graduate and transcripts post to get the associate number?

Monica Blauner 01:43 PM

It will be available on the CSCSW website:  clinicalsocialworksociety.org

DiAnna 01:38 PM

I am in the process of being hired by my current internship agency. They have already completed a LiveScan for me in August 2023. Could I use this live scan under the 90-day rule once I graduate? Or should I complete a new LiveScan with the agency upon my hire?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:46 PM

yes you can use that livescan if you have done it.

Anonymous Attendee 01:40 PM

Confirming, Law and Ethics course not required to apply for ASW?

Carl Peralta 01:57 PM

Only registrants (Associates) are eligible to sit for the Law and Ethics Exam.

Patricia Korijn, she/her, Coast Miwok lands 01:40 PM

Where can you take the live scan and fingerprints?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:47 PM

There are places locally where you can do your live scan. YOur employer may refer you to a place as well. If they require it, they will guide you.

Anonymous Attendee 01:41 PM

where can we get a copy of these slides?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:20 PM

we will post on the CSCSW website.

Anonymous Attendee 01:41 PM

Can we still collect supervision hours from a private practice once we get our ASW even if they do not count for the 90-day rule?

Carl Peralta 02:01 PM

Individuals may only work and earn hours in a private practice once they have a registration number.  Therefore, any hours earned under the 90-Day Rule can only be earned in a setting that is not a private practice or professional corporation.

Casey Young 01:41 PM

What are the specific extra items needed for people who received their MSW out of state?

Carl Peralta 02:02 PM

Typically, out-of-state applicants will need to complete certain additional coursework, and that information can be found in our out-of-state applications.

Anonymous Attendee 01:41 PM

for the live scan form, does it need to be dated AFTER you graduated? i was just hired in 02/2024 and I graduate 5/2024

Sarah Jayyousi 01:48 PM

You can use a prior livescan for the same employer to meet the 90 day rule.

Caitlyn Newman 01:42 PM

If we've been at our place of employment for many years (but livescanned in the beginning) do we still need to do a new livescan for the application?

Carl Peralta 02:02 PM

As long as you have been Live Scanned for your employer at some point, it will count towards the 90-Day Rule.

Leah Pickar 01:42 PM

Do we actually submit the weekly logs? Or is that for our record keeping?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:48 PM

you save it in case you are audited

Diep (she/her) 01:42 PM

Do you need separate live scans if you work at more than one place?

Carl Peralta 02:03 PM

Yes, if you wish to count the hours under the 90-Day Rule.

Norma Miller 01:43 PM

If all 3000 hours are not accumulated within the first year, do hours fall off one year at a time at the 6-year mark after application, or do you lose one year at a time?  Hours don’t fall off unless you exceed 6 years.

To clarify my question if I were to exceed 6 years, do all of the hours accumulated in the 6 years fall off and do we need to start over or do we lose hours that are 6 years old?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:49 PM

you lose hours that are over 6 years old

Caitlyn McCartney 01:43 PM

For clarification, if you're an ACSW, and you pass the law and ethics exam, you dont have to take it again?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:52 PM

yes

Margaret Hoyum 01:44 PM

Does a livescan have to be provided for that? Specifically, I took time off for school, but when I return I don’t have to complete another livescan.

Carl Peralta 02:07 PM

If you worked at a site while you were in school and completed a Live Scan for your employer at that time and plan to earn hours at that site post-degree, you do not need to complete another Live Scan.

Anonymous Attendee 01:44 PM

To clarify- You can only have a max of 10 hours in category, “A,” for every 1 unit of superivison, correct? Does that mean that A1 only counts FTF hours (which may be less than 10 hours)?

Carl Peralta 02:09 PM

I am not clear what you mean by FTF.

Emily Arteaga 01:44 PM

For Military Spouses how fast does their acsw registration get expidited?

Steve Sodergren 02:08 PM

They will get placed at the front of the applicaitons and will be done in a week.

Anonymous Attendee 01:45 PM

Is Docusign an acceptable form of signature for weekly supervision documentation?

Carl Peralta 02:10 PM

Yes, all forms may be signed using an original signature, digital signature, or photcopy signature.  Applications still require an original signatue though.

Anonymous Attendee 01:46 PM

What happens if you’ve been collecting your hours incorrectly, while you interpreted that you only needed 1 unit of superivison for every 10 hours colleted in Categor, “A1” (and had more than 10 hours total in Category, “A”)?

Carl Peralta 02:12 PM

If you were earning clinical experience and gaining supervision at a ratio of 1 unit of supervision for every 10 clinical hours, you have more supervision than actually required and all of your hours should count.

Anonymous Attendee 01:47 PM

How can we determine is our MSW program satisfied these requirements? (suicide prevention training, for example)

Steve Sodergren 02:09 PM

You will need to check with your program. They will be able to tell you.

Janette Rodriguez 01:47 PM

are we able to get fingerprinted on our own or we have to get hired on by an agency and get oour fingerprint?

Carl Peralta 02:12 PM

The law requires that you be fingerprint by your hours in order to count hours under the 90-Day Rule.

Anonymous Attendee 01:47 PM

Can we apply for ASW even before our degrees are conferred? How soon can we apply from our graduation date?

Steve Sodergren 02:10 PM

If you apply before you graduate, you will receive a deficiency notice. We appreciate it if you wait until you have graduated and have all the documents you are required to submit.

Sarah Colling 01:48 PM

how do I know if my graduate degree included the suicide assessment requirement?

Steve Sodergren 02:10 PM

You will need to check with your school.

Anonymous Attendee 01:48 PM

If a supervisor doesn’t work for your employer, how do they typically gain access to client records?

Steve Sodergren 02:11 PM

Private answer

There will need to be a documented agereement between the employer and supervisor to allow them access to client records.

Jennifer Li 01:48 PM

What is a good website to get all coursework covered?

Carl Peralta 02:15 PM

There is a list of Board recognized CE provider approval agencies on the Board's website, and you can go through any of the agencies to find providers for the coursework you need.

Anonymous Attendee 01:48 PM

I registered with BBS ten years ago and received an ASW number. However,  I only renewed once as a I was working in a different field. Now, I want to work on getting my license.  Do I have to take the law & ethics exam before I can register again?

Steve Sodergren 02:13 PM

Private answer

You will need to have passed the Law & Ethics Exam before being you can obtain a subsequent registration.

Rashmi Pattarkine 01:49 PM

Please correct me this process:

1. filling ASW application

2.law and ethics exam

3. supervised 3000 hours - from who I can be supervised? do ineed to find company/organisation?

currently, I m not working so how and whom to approach for supervised hours?

Steve Sodergren 02:15 PM

Private answer

I would review this resource. It explains the process and how to gain supervised hours:  https://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/publications/lcsw_handbook.pdf

Janet Yuen 01:50 PM

Did you say that we have to submit our live scan with the application for LCSW licscensure?

Carl Peralta 02:16 PM

Yes, you will need to complete a Live Scan for the Board and submit it with your application.

Anonymous Attendee 01:50 PM

Essentially we have to wait till we graduate and transcripts post to get the associate number?

Steve Sodergren 02:16 PM

That is correct.

Anonymous Attendee 01:50 PM

Can you please repeat that- For ASW renewals, you have to do a 3 hour law and ethics course AND a 3 hour telehealth course? I thought the telehealth course reuirement was only for licensed people. So, does that mean registants have to do 6 units in total?

Steve Sodergren 02:19 PM

Private answer

The 3 hour of Telehealth will need to be comnpleted before applying for licensure.  The 3 hours of Law & Ethics are required for your annual registration renewal.

Nicole Hatzakis 01:50 PM

If we take the law and ethics exam and pass it once getting your associate number/registration, do we still have to take is every single year?

Carl Peralta 02:17 PM

Once you pass the Law and Ethics Exam, you will not need to take it again.

Anonymous Attendee 01:50 PM

So to clarify about the 90 day rule. To make sure that I am understanding it correctly. This is after we gradurate and get our MSW and we are working at a place where a live scan is done, getting supervision hours. We can esentially get hours while wating to get our ASW number. Once we get our number, we fill out the form and send our livescan

Carl Peralta 02:18 PM

Most of what you said is correct.  Once you get your number, though, you will continue to record your hours.  Once they are complete, you will submit your hours and the Live Scan you did for your employer to the Board for evaluation.

Rashmi Pattarkine 01:51 PM

Can I come in person to Sacramento office to undertand detail info ? is there is any student counselor in person to guide?

Carl Peralta 02:20 PM

You are always able to come into the Board's office if you choose to, however, the Board does not have student couselors on staff.  All of the information you need is posted on the Board's website.

Anonymous Attendee 01:51 PM

What happens if you miss a renewal course because you misunderstoof you needed to complete a course? Can you take the course you missed after your renewal?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:20 PM

Yes, you just need to take before you apply for the LCSW exam.

Rocio Becerra 01:51 PM

How do we keep track of Supervision hours for licensure?

Carl Peralta 02:23 PM

By regulation, you are required to record your hours on a weekly basis using the Board's weekly logs.  Once you are done earning hours at a particular site, your supervisor will need to sign an experience verification form for you.  The form is a summary of the hours earned at the site and will be submitted to the Board later.

vanessa Covarrubias 01:51 PM

should we get a PO box right away ? or does our address not show as an ASW ?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:10 PM

your address will be public. You can use a PO box or use your employer's address if they allow.

Louisa 01:51 PM

How long has the law been that you need an additional unit of supervision if you go over 10 hours in section A for collecting hours?

Carl Peralta 02:21 PM

The law that regulates supervision ratios has existed for decades.

Maritza Granados 01:52 PM

To meet the new coursework are they coursework provided free or where can we find these?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:21 PM

I am not aware of an entity that provides them for free. Sometimes employers cover the cost.

Anonymous Attendee 01:53 PM

If you graduated with your MSW prior to 2008, do you have to take a law and ethics CE course prior to applying for a ASW registration number?

Carl Peralta 02:25 PM

If your program was in-state and did not include a Law and Ethics course, you will need to complete one before the Board can issue you a registration.

Anonymous Attendee 01:53 PM

Are the video guides in the FAQ section on the bbs website?

Steve Sodergren 02:26 PM

Is there a simple checklist to follow so that we can track all the requirements through the process?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:11 PM

Can all hours be completed doing telehealth?

Carl Peralta 02:25 PM

Yes, all hours can be done through telehealth.

Will we get a copy of this recording?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:35 PM

Yes, on the CSCSW website.

Shaina Neuwirth 01:54 PM

Can you speak moore about the classes and when those are needed throughout the process?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:12 PM

https://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/forms/lcs/lcsapp.pdf. You can complete the additional coursework before you apply for the lcsw license

Anonymous Attendee 01:54 PM

I am a licensed social worker in NJ, and considering moving to CA before all of my clinical hours are finished there. Is it possible to transfer supervised clinical hours from another state to CA when getting licensed as an ASW?

Carl Peralta 02:26 PM

Yes, it is possible.  Please email the LCSW Unit at BBS.LCSW@dca.ca.gov for more information.

Asher Styrsky 01:54 PM

Are there any apps that help track hours and handle all this paperwork?

Monica Blauner 01:58 PM

Private answer

The one I have heard of people using is Track Your Hours.  But this is not an endorsement.  There may be others.

Anonymous Attendee 01:55 PM

If we've been at our place of employment for many years (but livescanned in the beginning) do we still need to do a new livescan for the application?

Carl Peralta 02:27 PM

If you have already be Live Scanned at the place where you plan to earn hours under the 90-Day Rule, you do not need to complete a new one.

Anonymous Attendee 01:55 PM

Is there an email where I can send more technical questions to?

Sarah Jayyousi 01:58 PM

If you are a CSCSW member you can email the BBS liaison.

If I have hours in CA and another state can the out of state hours under supervision as an LMSW count towards the overall 3000 requirement?

Carl Peralta 02:30 PM

Yes, you can count out-of-state hours.  Please contact the LCSW Unit at BBS.LCSW@dca.ca.gov for more information.

Norma Miller 01:56 PM

I am so sorry. I think I just need to be clear; I have heard two different things. If we are not able to renew in 6 years, are all hours lost, or do they fall off over time? For example, in Year 7 - all of year 1 hour falls off and in year 8 all of year 2 Or after year 6 do all of the hours accumulated in the 6 years

Sarah Jayyousi 02:22 PM

In year 7, the hours in year one fall off.

vanessa Covarrubias 01:58 PM

should we get a PO box right away ? or does our address not show as an ASW ?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:03 PM

you can use PO box or many use your employer's addres

Rachelle Tuck 01:58 PM

Do you know the California Statues the DOJ refers to when an organization is applying to offer LiveScans?

I am having to initiate the 90 rule application within the nonprofit I work for… and I don’t know the CA statues.

I know you might not either but thought I’d ask. Thank you for your time here and assistance.

Sarah Jayyousi 02:03 PM

we don't know about DOJ process. contact them directly

Jacky Cortez 01:59 PM

One of my professors encouraged me to apply for the ASW registration before I graduate and to ensure that my school sends my transcript promptly after my degree is conferred. Would you recommend this approach as well?

Thank you all for this information. I am obtaining my MSW degree from a university outside of CA. Can you please explain the additional requirements needed for licensing for those of us with out-of-state degrees?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:22 PM

the link for out of state applicant was covered live and has all requirements posted clearly. Please review.

How soon can we take the Law and Ethics exam?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:13 PM

as soon as you get your ASW number.

Maribel 02:09 PM

For the law and ethics exam. Just to clarify, we can take it any time before our ASCW registration is expired? or do we have to take the law and ethics a few weeks before it expires?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:14 PM

recommend taking it as soon as you get your ASW number. Must take it within the year.

Rocio Becerra 02:10 PM

Just to be clear: do we not need to complete our hours first and then get a test for Law and Ethics?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:15 PM

No you can take law and ethics as soon as you get registered. You take the second exam after your hours post.

Leah Pickar 02:10 PM

Can you continue sharing common roadblocks/ errors/ barriers you see in the application process? Was really helpful to hear about!

Sarah Jayyousi 02:15 PM

sorry we have limited time. Recommend that you study the site that was posted in the chat.

Anonymous Attendee 02:10 PM

How long does it take for the license number to be issued after submitting the upgrade to fully licensed application online with payment?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:23 PM

Answered live. Go to the link in the chat and it takes you to BBS Facebook page which updates the timeline.

Anonymous Attendee 02:10 PM

Sarah Jayyousi 02:38 PM

You need to attempt to take the law and ethics exam annually until you pass it. You will not be able to renew if you don't take it. Once you pass it, you don't need to take it again.

Anonymous Attendee 02:11 PM

I looked on the BBS site and it is unclear from my review on whether I can count my out of state hours towards the 3000 hour requirement. I have 1500 hours as an ASW but my overall hours would be more if I can count my out of state supervised hours. The question is, will those hours be counted or acknowledged by the BBS?

Carl Peralta 02:29 PM

Yes, you can count out of state hours.  Please email the LCSW Unit at BBS.LCSW@dca.ca.gov.

Anonymous Attendee 02:13 PM

So we mail our application in and we can have the school email our transcript in, correct? I’d assume once we order the transcirpt we can then send out applicaiton via mail?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:24 PM

The school can send it electronicslly to the BBS. You can submit the applciation before your transcript posts.

Anonymous Attendee 02:14 PM

What is ASW?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:17 PM

associate social worker

Anonymous Attendee 02:15 PM

How long does it take to complete the 3,000 hours

Sarah Jayyousi 02:17 PM

if you work full time 2 years. Depends on your hours.

Janet Yuen 02:19 PM

Carl, you said that we have to submit a Live Scan with our application for licensure but we have already done a live scan for the ASW - do we submit THAT live scan?

Steve Sodergren 02:23 PM

Private answer

You will submit your Livescan you completed for your registration application. At the time you apply for licensure, you will need submit the Livescan you completed for thr 90 day rule.

Anonymous Attendee 02:19 PM

Is there a requirement to have had Law and Ethics coursework in your MSW program in order to apply as an ASW registrant (w a ASW number?

Carl Peralta 02:33 PM

Yes, a Law and Ethics course is required in order to receive a registration.  If you did not complete a course in your program, you will need to complete one before receiving a registration.

Anonymous Attendee 02:22 PM

I think that my question was overlooked: I am a licensed social worker in NJ, and considering moving to CA before all of my clinical hours are finished there. Is it possible to transfer supervised clinical hours from another state to CA when getting licensed as an ASW?

Steve Sodergren 02:28 PM

Private answer

Out of state supervised hours can be counted. See our info on Out of State Applicants : https://www.bbs.ca.gov/applicants/lcsw.html

Resheda Patterson, MSW 02:25 PM

If I'm applying for registration with a Subsequent registration application does the Additional courses required prior to licensure apply to me? Does BBS have my previous documents on file from my prior registration? Thank you

Carl Peralta 02:35 PM

All additional coursework must be completed at the time an Associate submits their hours to the Board.  If you completed the coursework and have already submitted it to the Board, it will be on file.

Vanessa Giron 02:26 PM

i have been doing my supervision for 1 year and have about 1,500 hours left. i work in a very clinical setting where 1:1, groups, treatment plans, etc are apart of my every day work day. is this normal? or will i be questioned on how fast i have been able to aquire the hours?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:27 PM

That is not uncommon. You still need to meet the 104 week requirement. You can also collect only 40 hours weekly.

Anonymous Attendee 02:27 PM

I have heard that some people use apps/software to track their supervised hours with digital signatures from their supervisors. Are these acceptable substitutes for the official weekly hours logs in the event of an audit?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:29 PM

You still need the forms posted on the BBS website.

Cassidy Fan 02:28 PM

Do we set up out brEze account after we receice confirmation that our ASW application has been received?

Carl Peralta 02:36 PM

It is recommended you set up your Breeze account at the time you submit your registration application to the Board.

Anonymous Attendee 02:30 PM

To clarify- You can only have a max of 10 hours in category, “A,” for every 1 unit of superivison, correct? Does that mean that A1 only counts Face-to-Face hours (which may be less than 10 hours)?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:35 PM

Yes, you can have less than 10 hours weekly. Once you pass 10 hours of face to face then you need two units of supervision.

Sarah Jayyousi 02:37 PM

The requirement for supervision is 1 unit (1 hour of individual or triadic supervision or 2 hours of group supervision) for the first 10 hours of clinical experience claimed in a week.  For any clinical experience more than 10 hours, an extra unit of supervision is required.

Anonymous Attendee 02:38 PM

To clarify, do we register via Breeze for our licensure exam to get our LCSW?

Carl Peralta 02:39 PM

Once your hours have been approved, you will need to sign up with ASWB to take the Clinical Exam.

Sarah Jayyousi 02:41 PM

No, some people have only one

Mallory MacInnis ~ MFT Trainee 02:40 PM

If you accumulate extra supervision hours during certain weeks then the requirement for 10 client facing hours, can those hours count for other weeks where you may have more than 10 client facing hours?

Carl Peralta 02:42 PM

Unfortunately, no.  By law, supervision counts only in the week it is earned.

Anonymous Attendee 02:43 PM

To clarify, what is the process you recommend when trying to get your hours approved?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:48 PM

once you completed your hours, you apply for lincense and submit the forms with the hours verification form. All on the website.

Anonymous Attendee 02:44 PM

Anonymous Attendee 02:44 PM

how long should we maintain the PO box we rent for the ASW application? Does the BBS ever contact us based on the address we use for the ASW registration application?

Yes, you will get renewal notices and copies of your registration and license.

Mallory MacInnis ~ MFT Trainee 02:46 PM

Where is best place on the BBs website to find information about gaining hour and/or getting licensed out of state?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:47 PM

https://www.bbs.ca.gov/applicants/lcsw.html

Go to forms and then out-of state.

Mercedes Parker she/her 02:48 PM

When collecting our licensure hours, how many years does our supervisor need to have had their LCSW?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:49 PM

two years

Carl Peralta 02:49 PM

A supervisor must be licensed at least two years prior to supervising you.

Anonymous Attendee 02:49 PM

Do you recommend ASW's apply for malpractice insurance?

Carl Peralta 02:50 PM

The Board does handle insurance issues.  For guidance, it is recommended you reach out to your professional association.

Anonymous Attendee 02:50 PM

I was recently hired as a social-emotional school counselor for a charter school (non academic school counselor) My duties include short-term counseling, SEL lessons, family collaterals/advocacy. Can I count these hours towards licensure or should I find another agency?

Carl Peralta 02:52 PM

The Board does not determine which hours you can count or how they are to be recorded.  That is your supervisor's responsibillity.

Anonymous Attendee 02:50 PM

How would one apply to become a Student Ambassador for CSCSW?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:56 PM

contact Rosy. You can reach out to "Rosy Flores" <ms.rosy.flores@gmail.com>

Anonymous Attendee 02:51 PM

I think my agency was under the impression that they could use 1 unit of superivison for 10 hours of clinical work, but specifically Catgeory, “A1.” I had more than 10 hours in Category “A,” but no additional unit of supervision (only 1 unit total). Will my application get flagged?

Carl Peralta 02:54 PM

If there are any issues with your application, you will be notified by your evaluator.  Unfortunately, the Board does not pre-evaluate, so we cannot give you specific guidance in this case.

Anonymous Attendee 02:52 PM

How early after getting our ASW number can we take our Law and Ethics Exam?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:55 PM

Immediately.

Mercedes Parker she/her 02:52 PM

On the “Processing” slide of the PPT presentation , the part at the bottom about answering yes to the background question will extend the time of our application – what was this referring to? Referring to allowing a background check? Or something else?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:54 PM

I believe this is related to answering yes to whether you have a criminal background. You must disclose it and it may take longer to process.

Anonymous Attendee 02:52 PM

Is updating our registration each year as an ASW before licensure an immediate online process?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:54 PM

Yes, renewals are automated online.

Gabriel Ehimen 02:52 PM

please can we get a copy of the slide used during this presentation.

Sarah Jayyousi 02:53 PM

It will be posted on our CSCSW website.

Dayshalee USC 02:54 PM

Do we need to take the law and ethics exam before we start collecting our hours?

Carl Peralta 02:56 PM

Once you have your registration, you can take the law and ethics exam while you are earning your hours.

Anonymous Attendee 02:55 PM

Thanks Carl. In response to your answer, I will need to find a supervisor outside of the agency because there is not one employed by the school. So, it will be up to the contracted supervisor to sign-off/approve my hours? Thanks!

Carl Peralta 02:59 PM

You can hire an off-site supervisor as long as your employer allows it, and they can sign for your hours.  Please be aware, a written oversight agreement must be signed by the employer and the supervision prior to the commencement of supervision.

Anonymous Attendee 02:57 PM

Do I need CEU's as a ASW?

Sarah Jayyousi 02:57 PM

There is additional coursework that is required, but CEUs are required every two years after you become licensed as an LCSW.

Anonymous Attendee 02:57 PM

To clarify, if your MSW program does not meet the requirments of the suicide trianing, telehealth etc, we must complete these courses BEFORE we apply for our ASW number? Thank you.

Sarah Jayyousi 02:59 PM

No, you can apply now and get those done before you apply for the license.
