SESSION 2 - The Therapeutic Relationship Unpacked: Current Concepts of Transference & Countertransference (SESSION 2)

Presenter: Richard Almond, MD
Moderator/Discussant: Dena Sorbo, LCSW

Freud noted that people in treatment bring their pasts with them; he called this “transference.” Later, he observed that therapists do the same, and that they react emotionally to what patients say and do – “countertransference.” Over the past 100 years these terms have been elaborated in detail, as understanding of therapeutic process has evolved. The webinar will present a complex, sophisticated view of the two concepts, how they can enrich psychotherapy, with extensive clinical illustrations. Dr. Almond will be joined by Dena Sorbo, LCSW who will serve as moderator and discussant for both presentations.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Enable the participant to define and recognize transference and countertransference.
  2. Deepen the participant’s understanding of these two psychodynamic concepts and how they affect the therapeutic relationship.
  3. Help the participant relate the concepts of transference and countertransference to therapeutic technique.
