Presenter: Richard Almond, MD Moderator/Discussant: Dena Sorbo, LCSW
Freud noted that people in treatment bring their pasts with them; he called this “transference.” Later, he observed that therapists do the same, and that they react emotionally to what patients say and do – “countertransference.” Over the past 100 years these terms have been elaborated in detail, as understanding of therapeutic process has evolved. The webinar will present a complex, sophisticated view of the two concepts, how they can enrich psychotherapy, with extensive clinical illustrations. Dr. Almond will be joined by Dena Sorbo, LCSW who will serve as moderator and discussant for both presentations.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Richard Almond, MD is a psychiatrist practicing in Palo Alto. He trained at Yale and began his career in social psychiatry. He later shifted to psychoanalytic therapy, receiving his training in San Francisco. Dr. Almond has taught on the practice of psychoanalytic therapy in the San Francisco Bay area and in Portland Oregon. Among his writings include two books and papers on “Pride and Prejudice,” “Jane Eyre,” the film “Groundhog Day, and the therapeutic process. In 2006, he initiated the development of the Palo Alto Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (PAAPTP), which offers a variety of post-licensure training experiences for practicing therapists. He is a member of the New Technologies Committee of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
Dena Sorbo, LCSW
Dena Sorbo, LCSW is a clinical social worker with a private practice providing psychoanalysis and psychotherapy for individuals and couples in the San Francisco Bay area. She is Adjunct Clinical Faculty at the Stanford School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and has had extensive teaching and training responsibilities with the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. She has held numerous leadership positions within the psychoanalytic and clinical social work community.

This DISTRICT MEETING meets the qualifications for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Note: With supervisor approval, registered ASWs may use CEs toward LCSW hours.
