Description:

All too often an autistic child is upset, goes to a doctor, and receives one of the two FDA approved medications for irritability in autism. While these medications, risperidone, and aripiprazole, can be helpful, even life saving at times, they also can have very troubling side effects. There are many important steps to consider before using these medications, or any medications. This talk will cover the steps in our new algorithm for sorting out what is behind the upset of other autistic symptoms and how to address these problems more directly, and more safely for our autistic clients and their families.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to practice from the perspective of a reversed form of bio-psycho-social care ie social-psycho-bio informed care in considering common symptoms and challenges in autistic clients.
  2. Participants will be able to analyze current psychotropic treatment as it relates to target symptoms developmental aspects, and informed consent for common mental health conditions in autistic children and teens.
  3. Participants will be able to employ an effective strategy for building more productive collaborative relationships with prescribers of psychotropic medications for their autistic clients.
