Session 1: Cutting-edge Ethical Issues in Clinical Social Work—Challenges in the Digital Age (meets the BBS requirement for 3 hours of Telehealth Law & Ethics)
Sunday, February 25, 2024 | 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Presenter: Dr. Frederic Reamer

Today’s practitioners face ethical challenges that are unprecedented and could hardly have been imagined by social work’s earliest practitioners. Contemporary clinical social workers can provide services remotely to clients they may never meet in person; search online for information about clients without their knowledge or consent; store sensitive client information in the "cloud"; and communicate with clients and former clients on online social networking sites. Dr. Frederic Reamer will provide a comprehensive overview of ethics challenges related to social workers' increasing use of digital and other technology and discuss the implications of recently enacted ethics standards, regulatory standards, and practice standards governing social workers' use of technology.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify trends in the development of social work ethics standards in the digital age.
- Apply practical ethical decision-making frameworks and protocols.
- Identify ethical issues that pose malpractice and liability risks related to social workers' use of technology.
- Design strategies to protect clients and practitioners.
