Presenter: Dr. Bruce Brodie

This 2-part program will review Object Relations Theory and Intersubjectivity, demonstrate how these two theories are linked to each other and how they provide a pathway to informed clinical technique. It is rare for a book or a presentation to be rich in both theoretical material and in psychotherapeutic process, and Dr. Brodie deliberately strives to bridge the two.

Part One (on December 13) will address the work of D.W. Winnicott and his concepts of the “holding environment”, mirroring and the mother-infant unit as prototypes for the therapist/client relationship. Potential space and the importance of paradoxical thinking will be explored.

Part Two (on January 10) will shift out of Object Relations theory and into Intersubjectivity. Dr. Brodie will introduce Ogden’s concept of dialectic thinking and Benjamin’s notions of splitting and the complementary relationship between “doer and done to”. Although these psychodynamic concepts are most likely familiar, Dr. Brodie’s thoughtful reworking of them is highly original.

We hope that attendees will sign up for both programs, but we have created separate registrations to accommodate those who may only be able to come to one or the other.

Part One: December 13

Following completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of Object Relations Theory
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of Winnicott’s overall contribution to Object Relations Theory
  3. Demonstrate the importance of paradoxical thinking in Winnicott’s theories

Part Two: January 10th

Following completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a foundational understanding of Intersubjective Theory
  2. Demonstrate understanding of Thomas Ogden’s concept of dialectical thinking
  3. Demonstrate understanding of Jessica Benjamin’s concept of the “Doer/Done-to” relationship.

About the Presenter:  

Dr. Brodie received his BA from UC Berkeley and his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Chicago. He worked for 20 years at a secure residential treatment center for delinquent adolescents. He was adjunct faculty at the California School for Professional Psychology for 20 years and has been affiliated with the Saturday Center for Psychotherapy and Training for 35 years. He is the author of Adolescents and Delinquency: an Object Relations Theory Approach. Jason Aronson, 2007, as well as of his recently published book which is the subject of this program: Object Relations and Intersubjective Theories in the Practice of Psychotherapy,. Routledge, 2020. Dr. Brodie is currently in private practice in Santa Monica.

CSCSW and AAPCSW Members: $40.00 for each or $70.00 for both

Students: Members of CSCSW or AAPCSW $10.00 each or $15.00 for both

This course meets the qualifications for 4 hours of continuing education credit (2 CEUs/day) for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Note: With supervisor approval, registered ASWs may use CEs toward LCSW hours.
