Therapists are rapidly adapting to the availability of videoconferencing technologies for clinical practice. These are now widely used in personal relationships and business, and both patients and therapists often suggest their inclusion as part of treatment. I will describe a variety of clinical situations, including video as a way to maintain treatment when the patient relocates; work with a former patient in a geographically inaccessible location; requests for video sessions with local patients. These lead to several issues – is physical presence vital for treatment? What are the “side effects” of using this technology? Do we see psychological change?

Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Acquaint attenders with the range of uses of web-based video technology for psychotherapy.
  2. Provide a wide range of examples that demonstrate challenges and benefits of video therapy.
  3. Engage attenders in a discussion of their individual experiences with video therapy.
