Presenter:  Gordon Wong, MD

Description:  Dr. Gordon Wong gave an excellent introduction on the issues around marijuana use last year as this substance was now becoming legal in California. This presentation will be an update. Dr. Wong will point out that "successful use of cannabis in medicine is challenging and its usefulness that we hear about in the media is actually not very well proven. Due to its wide distribution in the body and that nearly every organ system has cannabis receptors, it is difficult to not have undesired side effects in both short and long term use. THC and CBD from plants as well as synthetic cannabis behave very differently and future studies should give clearer guidelines on how to use them effectively."

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

  • Appreciate that cannabis affects nearly all organ systems in the body. It is " pharmacologically dirty" and therefore has myriad effects both desired and undesired.
  • Appreciate that cannabis has unique effects on the developing adolescent developing brain.
  • Understand that current evidence for medical cannabis use is restricted only to very limited clinical situations.

About the Presenter: Dr. Gordon Wong is a psychopharmacologist in private practice in Menlo Park. Last year Dr. Wong gave an excellent and very popular presentation to our group on "Marijuana, Health Risks and Benefits." He has agreed to return to give us an update with a closer look at some of the medical and scientific issues.
