Presenter: Adriana Miu, PhD

Description:

Adriana Miu, PhD, of the Stanford University "Confidential Support Team" will be our speaker for the CSCSW meeting on Friday January 18 2019. She will be giving a presentation discussing her work with students who have been impacted by sexual assault and relationship violence, including domestic abuse, intimate partner abuse, stalking, and sexual or gender-based harassment and discrimination. She will introduce us to Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy that has been effective in working with symptoms of PTSD. Additionally, she will have some interactive exercises and some case examples.

Goals:

  1. By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to define what sexual assault is and its impact on a college student population. They will learn the statistics of the incidence of sexual assaults on college campuses.
  2. Participants will be introduced to the use of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and how it is used in practice as an effective treatment for PTSD for victims of sexual assault, relationship violence, domestic abuse, etc.
  3. From case examples, participants will be able to show how CPT is different from other trauma treatment approaches and how and why it is the appropriate treatment in specific cases.
