Presenter:  Richard Bradway, LCSW

Description: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative approach to working with individuals that helps to facilitate behavior change. Participants will gain a working knowledge of the term, “Harm Reduction” and will walk away with a deeper understanding of the spirit of Motivational Interviewing including when, where and how to use this evidenced-based practice with clients. We will identify specific tools to use and discuss strategies for implementation in your place of practice.

Objectives:

  1. Know and understand the basics of Motivational Interviewing, including how to use specific skills to enhance motivation.
  2. Know and understand the term “Harm Reduction” and how it fits into interventions for treating individuals with substance use disorders.
  3. Know and understand how MI facilitates the reduction of discord in the therapeutic alliance leading to positive behavioral change.

About the Presenter: 

Rich Bradway, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., is a licensed clinical social worker with a professional focus in co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. He currently teaches at San Diego State University and California State University-San Marcos in their respective Schools of Social Work and maintains a private psychotherapy practice. As a non-profit executive, he oversaw his organization’s portfolio of alcohol and drug services programs throughout California and directed four SAMHSA Women, Families and Children Treatment funded projects. He is skilled at utilizing training and process improvement to enhance clinical outcomes for clients served in various settings.

PLEASE NOTE:   NEW TIME  - STARTING JANUARY 5, 2019, THE SAN DIEGO DISTRICT PROGRAMS WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE FIRST SATURDAY MORNING OF EACH MONTH, FROM 10-12 NOON, AT OUR PRESENT JFS LOCATION. 

CEUs: 1.5 CEU hours for LCSW’.s, MFT’, and LPC’s. Note: Registered Associate Clinical Social Workers -- as long as your supervisor approves participation, you can now use CEs toward LCSW hours

The San Diego Chapter of CSCSW holds its meetings on the first first Saturday of the month from 10am to 12 noon at the Jewish Family Service building, 8788 Balboa Avenue in Kearny Mesa. Meetings begin with a half hour of mingling, networking, and community building, followed by our program. CEU programs meet the requirements for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs as specified by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences; CEUs are FREE to our members.
