Presenter: Deborah Abraham, MFT

Description:  Deborah Abraham, MFT will be discussing the practice of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), for the treatment of anxiety, depression and emotional distress. She will familiarize us with MBCT ---the intersection of Cognitive Behavioral therapy and meditation. We will learn how this practice can enhance awareness of patients' feeling states and help with regulating their emotions. She will discuss the client population for whom this technique is best suited. Deborah will also guide us toward resources in the community that are available for learning more about using this practice.

Goals:

  1. To understand the benefits of “awareness practice” in clinical work for both the clinician and for clients. Additionally, to know when mindfulness techniques are indicated and for which clients
  2. To familiarize the audience with the intersection of Cognitive/Behavioral Therapy and Meditation Practice and it’s uses in clinical practice.
  3. To practice bringing awareness to physical sensation as a way to encounter and work with emotion
  4. To learn about resources in the community for further investigation of this kind of clinical work.
