Presenter:  Gia Herndon, Marriage and Family Therapist

Description:

C.G. Jung believed that the shadow, the darkest aspects of our personality, has the greatest value in healing old wounds and developing an authentic and holistic Self. Yet, we often completely deny its existence, or at the very least resist engaging with it. In doing so, we lose the tremendous amount of wisdom the shadow can give us. When we engage with the shadow, we are able to grow in compassion for ourselves and others and hold space for clients as they face their most difficult challenges.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to define and apply the concept of Shadow (C.G. Jung) as part of personality.
  2. Participants will understand why it is important for clinicians to work with shadow material.
  3. Participants will learn 2 - 3 techniques to safely explore shadow material.
  4. Participants will be able to identify potential shadow aspects of their own personality for further reflection.

About the Presenter: Gia has been a practicing therapist for over 17 years, with experience working in agency, higher education and private practice settings. She has also taught counseling classes at CSU, Bakersfield and a variety of psychology courses within the Sacramento Community College system. She works from a combination of Psychodynamic, Depth Psychology, Somatic, and Mindfulness perspectives and techniques, integrating art, sand tray, spirituality and nature whenever possible!

2 CEUs for LCSWs, MFTs and LPCCs. CEUs and brunch are free for members. Nonmembers: fee for attendance and coffee and snacks is $10, plus $20 if you want CEUs. If supervisors for ASWs approve, 2 hours may count toward licensure. Students and brand new graduates may attend free.
