Presenter: Kathleen Rapp, LCSW

Description:

This presentation will challenge your assumptions regarding Asperger’s or ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) that in its more mild manifestations can be extremely difficult to diagnose. Regardless of the clientele you serve, a certain percentage of your clients are likely to either have undiagnosed ASD or are dealing with a family member on the spectrum.

ASD is often incorrectly diagnosed as ADHD, OCD or narcissistic PD, but the etiology and treatment are very different. Even though there are often overlapping symptoms, correct diagnosis is critical.

This presentation will provide an introduction and overview of the issues surrounding the sometimes “invisible disorder” of high-functioning autism.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand what high-functioning autism is and is not.
  • Know what to look for with clients and understand why it is so often misdiagnosed.
  • Gain awareness of modifications in therapeutic techniques which are essential to more effectively helping these clients.
  • Understand and appreciate the significant impact of high-functioning autism on family members.

About the Presenter:

Kathleen Rapp, LCSW, received her MSW from West Virginia University. In private practice in Solana Beach since 1994, she has had a long-standing interest in autism. It has become the major portion of her practice in the last five years, and she currently mentors other therapists new to working with high-functioning autism.

In addition to working with individuals and couples, she facilitates support groups for spouses and partners of people on the autism spectrum.
