Presented by The American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work in joint sponsorship with The Sanville Institute and the California Society for Clinical Social Work
You are warmly invited to our upcoming program on Multicultural Issues in Clinical Practice, with guest speaker Zonya Johnson, PhD., Dean of the Sanville Institute, Berkeley. The program is put on by the Northern CA Chapter of the AAPCSW (American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work), co-sponsored by the Sanville Institute and the California Society for Clinical Social Work.
Description: In this presentation Dr. Johnson will explore the interface between the cultural values of the therapist and the client. The interactions fueled by these differences often go unnamed, and can generate a spectrum of issues in the clinical space. Dr. Johnson suggests that the goal of maintaining a relationally neutral stance in the therapeutic relationship may be both impossible and undesirable from a cultural perspective. From her viewpoint, understanding the cultural context and the role of unacknowledged privilege and bias can be pivotal to generating positive therapeutic outcome.
This seminar is timely, as we are all struggling to deepen our understanding of cultural bias. The meeting promises to be lively, stimulating and useful to therapists in a variety of settings, and hopefully will help clarify aspects of our own fears and prejudices. Please join us. Your participation has helped build a supportive community where we can feel safe speaking openly. We look forward to seeing you.
