Presenter: Neil Brown, LCSW

Description: Working with parents and teens in a family therapy model is a common challenge for many therapists trying to find that balance between parental mandates and the need for teen independence. The Ending the Parent Teen Control Battle Model is a therapeutic approach that takes the therapist out of the awkward middle and invites the family to change the pattern that supports the problem. The model builds off of Structural Family Therapy as well as Brief Therapy and is applicable to Family Therapy with children and couples as well as with families in the teen years.

Goals:

  1. Understand that adolescent issues brought into counseling live in repeating patterns of interaction within the family.
  2. Understand the concept of the Control Battle as an entity.
  3. Identify active and overt control battles as well as passive less obvious control battles.
  4. Learn skills to move families out of control battles to healthy empowered positions.
  5. Identify applications of the model in family and couples therapy.
