Presenter: Dr. Ellen Ruderman, Ph.D., Psy.D., LCSW

Description: Dr. Ellen Ruderman invites us into conversation about the challenges of practicing therapy, when threatening impositions of the current world outside may induce states of helplessness and anxiety in both therapist and patient. As world events become more daunting and dangerous, this creates an opportunity, perhaps necessity, for therapists to examine and discuss our own inner process (or countertransference), and possibly to reconsider certain ‘tried and true

practices. How do we maintain our focus on the internal lives of our patients, when external events have the capacity to greatly alter our patients’ emotional states, as well as our own?

Dr. Ruderman invites us to explore and address this new reality, in which we therapists are equally assaulted by the impact of the political and social incursions of our time, and may feel as helpless as our patients. How do we shift, when it is necessary, out of old therapeutic paradigms and become more attuned to the existential anxieties of our patients and ourselves. Dr. Ruderman will use clinical experiences to illustrate her points and encourages you to bring your own clinical examples to enhance the discussion.
