A discussion of “The Flexible Frame: Holding the patient in mind”

  • Saturday, February 10, 2018
  • 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM
  • 120 Commonwealth Ave., (Between Euclid & Geary) S.F., CA. 94118

The American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work in joint sponsorship with The Sanville Institute and the California Society for Clinical Social Work

This seminar will continue an evocative presentation and discussion of the “frame” by Dr. Betsy Cohen. She will review the concept of the “frame in psychoanalysis,” adding where it is functional or hurtful. The discussion will focus primarily on case material presented from participants. We will deepen our understanding of our own work, while strengthening understanding of the complexity and challenges we deal with daily.

Dr. Cohen notes that the frame is mutually created by the therapist and patient and is unique to each therapy. Not one size frame fits all. She evolved a way to help people not previously considered or held in mind by a parent, people who suffer from the profound on-going ramifications of parental and/or societal neglect and abuse.  These patients can be the most challenging, often testing the frame, generating self-doubt and anxiety among practitioners.

Participants in this seminar will receive a copy of Betsy’s paper beforehand. This seminar promises to be lively and stimulating and useful to therapists in a variety of settings and will help clarify some of your own concerns. Please join us even if you have missed the first presentation. Your participation is central to providing vitality and support to the group.

Betsy Cohen, LCSW, Ph.D., an analyst member and teacher at the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, is the author of The Snow White Syndrome: All about Envy (Macmillan,1987). She’s also published in the Jung Journal on “The Intimate Self-Disclosure,” “Jung’s Answer to Jews,” and “The Flexible Frame: Holding the patient in mind” (2017). Her Sanville Institute Ph.D. dissertation, “Welcoming Eros into Analysis,” (2010) uses ancient wisdom of Plato and the Song of Songs as instructive for contemporary psychoanalysis.. Her current interest is exploring how ancient wisdom could be incorporated into contemporary relational psychotherapy.
