Description:  This presentation will discuss anxiety disorders in children including main types, symptoms and developmental patterns, as well as comparing anxiety to the autism spectrum disorder. Evidence based treatments will be discussed, including outcome data. Several clinical vignettes of typical cases will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

As a result of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between fear and anxiety.
  • Name 2 types of DSM-5 Anxiety Disorders in children.
  • Explain the difference between anxiety and developmentally normal fear or anxiety.
  • Describe symptoms of anxiety when compared to symptoms of autism spectrum disorder .
  • Explain one evidenced based treatment for childhood anxiety.
  • Describe the best treatment outcome results based on a major research study of children and anxiety.

About the Presenter: Candace Adams, PhD is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice, treating adult individuals, families, children and adolescents. She has a wide range of clinical experience providing psychotherapy, consultation and evaluations related to children’s developmental and behavioral needs. She is also a past Volunteer Faculty Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UC Davis, Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, including co-facilitation of a child/adolescent seminar and clinical consultation for post-doctoral psychology fellows.

PLEASE NOTE: The meeting will be held a half hour later than usual due to a marathon that morning. If the streets are blocked, enter the church parking lot by Andrade Way from El Camino Ave.

This course meets the requirements for 2 CEUs for LCSWs, MFTs and LPCCs as specified by the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences. CEUs are FREE to our members, but cost $20 ($10 for each credit) for non-members. For those not earning CEUs, attendance is free. Also, if supervisors for ASWs approve, the course can count toward licensure hours.
