Presenter: Dr. Allen E. Lipscomb, PsyD, LCSW
Allen E. Lipscomb received a doctorate in clinical psychology with a clinical emphasis in marriage, family and child psychotherapy. Dr. Lipscomb is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in providing mental health services to individuals, children, youth and families of color. He has presented on topics such as mindfulness practices with children who have experienced trauma; building resilience in children and youth of color; and culturally affirming practices with marginalized communities. His areas of research are centered around the psychiatric epidemiology among racialized individuals who have experienced trauma. He is currently working on his next research project, which explores the utilization of E.M.D.R. psychotherapy to reduce the psychological effects of race-based trauma among people of color.
Dr. Lipscomb has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and is currently a Professor in the School of Social Work at CSUN.
He has previously taught courses at the University of Southern California School of Social Work, as well as Pacific Oaks College.
He is also the published author of: Black Male Grief Reaction to Trauma: A Clinical Case Study of One Man's Treatment.

SUMMARY OF PRESENTATION: One of the many disturbing aspects of grieving is experiencing a variety of unexpected or seemingly uncontrollable emotions and/or physical sensations. Often Black Males who mourn fear that they “are going crazy” or somehow “abnormal” in how they are responding to their loss. This process can look vastly different for African American Men compared to others.
This workshop is designed for mental health clinicians and students at all levels of experience and licensure. The goal is to teach, inform and encourage mental health practitioners to provide appropriate clinical services to Black men experiencing loss.
NOTE: Concepts and theories from this training can be applied to other marginalized populations and communities.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify how Black men respond to grief and loss.
- Be able to examine stigmas, stereotypes and cultural beliefs about Black male expressing their emotions as it relates to loss.
- Learn three ways to support, advocate and/or treat the unique grief reactions exhibited by Black men.

Bring your flyers, brochures and business cards for networking and socializing. Society members earn 2.0 CE units at no charge. The cost for non-members to receive 2.0 CE units is $20. This presentation meets the qualifications for 2.0 CE units for LCSWs, ASWs, LPCCs and MFTs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
NOTE: REGISTERED ASWs can now accrue CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS towards their license, as long as they receive prior approval from their supervisor.
