Mid-Peninsula District Meeting

Mid-Peninsula District Coordinators:

Presenter: Gordon Wong MD, MPH

Program Description:  The use of genetic testing to find new solutions for psychopharmacology treatment will be the focus of this presentation. There will be a specific look at treatment of mood disorders and emerging genetic markers that govern response and side effects. There has been a recent explosion of medications that affect mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and psychotic disorders that target various neurotransmitter systems including serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Genetic sequencing has enabled new insights as to what medications will be the most effective with each individual in effectiveness as well as side effects. In this presentation, Dr. Wong will help us understand this emerging new technology with its limitations and the fast evolving future direction of psychopharmacologic treatment.

Learning Goals:

  1. Have a beginning understanding of gene testing as an aide to picking effective medication treatment.
  2. Have an introductory understanding as a non-medical professional of the various neurotransmitter systems.
  3. Have some ideas on the future of psychopharmacology.
About the Presenter:

Dr. Gordon Wong is a psychopharmacologist in private practice in Menlo Park. Dr. Wong has been a popular and generous presenter at our Clinical Society Meetings. Last year he spoke on anxiety and mentioned the new genetic testing he is doing for some patients that has been extremely helpful. This year he will focus in on that new procedure.
