Presenter: Maureen S. Baum, Ph.D., Psy.D.

Description: This 2 hour presentation will include an overview of countertransference. The presentation will focus on the history and current views of countertransference.

Also included will be a focus on treatment issues that arise from the therapist’s intense reactions towards the patient in the clinical setting such as: anger, love, and guilt.

There will be time for questions and discussion.

About the Presenter: Dr. Baum has a psychoanalytic practice working with adolescents, couples, and adults and she provides individual supervision and consultation to therapists. She is on the faculty of the Wright Institute, Los Angeles and teaches post graduate level clinical seminars for therapists in training. Dr. Baum is also on the faculty of the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies where she teaches psychoanalytic candidates.

Learning objectives:

  1. Be familiar with the history and development of countertransference.
  2. Understand current views and definitions of countertranference.
  3. Be able to examine specific countertransference responses within a clinical setting.
  4. Learn how to use countertransference within the treatment setting.
