Description: The goal of the training on Basic Symptom Management, is to provide therapists with a set of tools to utilize with clients who have disruptive, distressing or persisting symptoms, impulses or behaviors. This knowledge will help clinicians inform clients that they have a choice of their responses to symptoms and impulses or can change behaviors. These tools can decrease the intensity, frequency and duration of symptoms and help clients learn ways to decrease problematic behaviors or their responses to impulses.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn tools for basic symptom management with clients.
  2. Utilize intervention strategies to identify client triggers and help the client respond to exacerbation of symptoms with less distress, decreased episodes and decreased duration of symptoms.
  3. Differentiate possible causes of treatment resistance from the need for a referral to a medical professional for evaluation and treatment.
