Wherever You Go, There You Are - Sabbatical or Travel: Using Clinical and Social Work Skills in Underserved Parts of the World

Program Presenter: Leah Fisher, LCSW

Date: Saturday, June 3, 2017

Time: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

After thirty years as a clinical social worker in private practice, Leah Fisher was able to take a sabbatical to pursue her dream of combining global travel with service. Traveling to Latin America and Asia, she found meaningful ways to use her mental health skills on her journey. Leah will discuss the experience of closing her practice; she will describe the advantages of being an older traveler and the mental health projects she engaged in. She will show captivating slides to illustrate her experiences as she shares her stories.

This presentation promises to be lively and, entertaining and just might inspire you to think about honoring your own important dreams. Our shared discussion hopefully will leave you thinking about a lifetime of skills and abilities you have to offer others in the world.

Please join us. Your participation is what makes our meetings engaging and special. Community is central to managing during these trying times. This presentation will offer us the opportunity to hear about a unique application of our skills.

Leah Fisher, LCSW, has had an unconventional career. She has changed her work focus as she approached each decade of her life. In her thirties, she offered “Considering Parenting” groups and later co-founded Birthways - a child and new parent support group. In her forties, she conducted workshop seminars on balancing work and family. In her fifties, she designed couple planning retreats with a focus on negotiating ways to honor each partner’s important dreams. In her sixties, Leah practiced what she preached: with her husband’s blessing, she lived and worked in various parts of the world for a year.
