Dialectical behavior therapy for substance use disorders (DBT-SUD) is an extension of standard Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for individuals who experience difficulties in regulating emotions and co-occurring substance use disorders. This presentation will discuss how to tailor the standard DBT skills model to address addictive behaviors as well as address the skills and concepts that are specific for DBT-SUD. 

Course Goals and Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to explain the concept of Dialectical Abstinence. 
  2. Participants will be able to name four DBT-SUD Skills. 
  3. Participants will be able to describe differences between Clear Mind, Clean Mind and Addict Mind.

About the Presenter: 

Suzette Bray, LMFT is the Founder and Executive Director of Village Counseling and Wellness, whose team of passionate and highly trained clinicians provides comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and other evidence-based treatments. With over 20 years of clinical experience, Suzette has created and run several innovative mental health programs for adults, children, adolescents and families.

Suzette is an intensively- trained DBT therapist and has received extensive advanced training in DBT from the top leaders in the field. She has trained and supervised many clinicians and has significant teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She speaks often on the topics of parenting, mindfulness and Dialectical Behavior Therapy plus DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE: Skills for Recovery and Relapse Prevention.

This presentation meets qualifications for LCSWs, ASWs, LPCCs, and MFTs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. REGISTERED ASWs can now accrue CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS towards their license, as long as they receive prior approval from their supervisor.
