Presenter: Andrew Susskind, LCSW, SEP, CGP

Description: Historically, psychotherapy has focused on the internal world of the client with a strong emphasis on feelings and thoughts. With the onset of somatic therapies, the mind-body connection encourages therapists to ask questions such as: What’s happening in your body right now? or What do you notice physically? These inquiries build somatic awareness in our clients as they identify when they are regulated or dysregulated.

Talk therapy engages the neocortex–our thinking, conscious brain–while somatic therapies access the subcortical system where trauma and distress are often stored. Current research in neuroscience reveals that unpleasant, painful memories often get stuck in the non-verbal, non-cognitive subcortical brain which diminishes our ability to live fully in the here and now. As a result, some people experience anxiety, depression or just a sense of not feeling like themselves. Somatic therapies help our clients’ process experiences that were too difficult to process at the time.

Course Goals and Educational Objectives:

  1. Introduce Somatic Awareness skills such as grounding, orienting and tracking.
  2. Distinguish between regulated and dysregulated states.
  3. Compare and Contrast Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting and EMDR.
  4. Demonstrate Brainspotting, a cutting edge brain-body approach.

About the Presenter: As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, Certified Group Psychotherapist and Certified Coach, Andrew Susskind brings a multi-faceted perspective to his clients. After completing a Master of Social Welfare degree from UCLA in 1991, he has maintained a private practice in West Los Angeles with a specialty in trauma and addictions. Andrew will be certified as a Brainspotting Practitioner in 2017.
