Description: This presentation will highlight common characteristics of first responders, describe the types of and differences between the effects of repeated exposure to routine stress and exposure to traumatic situations or critical incidents, and identify what clinicians need to know to work effectively with first responders.

Learning Objectives:

This presentation will:

  • Highlight common characteristics of first responders.
  • Describe the types of and differences between the effects of repeated exposure to routine stress and exposure to traumatic situations or critical incidents.
  • Recognize the common responses that result from repeated exposure to the stress inherent in working as a first responder as well as to traumatic situations or critical incidents.
  • Introduce participants to the field of Critical Incident Stress Management and highlight interventions used to assist first responders to cope with highly charged situations and critical incidents.
  • Identify what clinicians need to know to work effectively with first responders.

About the Presenter:  Ken is an approved instructor for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation’s Individual Crisis Intervention & Peer Support and their Group Crisis Intervention courses. He is a certified trauma specialist (CTS), is an adjunct faculty member of the police & fire academies at Fresno City College. He worked as a reserve police officer for 12 years and worked as a parole agent for the State of California until his retirement 2013. Ken has worked with public safety and emergency service personnel for the past 25 years. He has extensive training and experience in the areas of crisis, stress, trauma and critical incident stress management interventions. He has conducted over 400 formal critical incident stress debriefings with fire, police, EMS, hospital personnel, schools, financial institutions, government agencies, and industry and community groups.

CEUs: 1.5 CEUs will be offered for LCSWs - members earn credits at no cost. Credits for non-members is $15 per meeting.
