Presenter: Joan C. Dasteel, MSW, PhD

The focus of this presentation will be to illustrate issues in treating adults who have developmental disabilities including learning disorders, mental retardation, Autism Spectrum, Aspergers Syndrome and Down Syndrome. Both psychodynamic and cognitive approaches will be illustrated. The purpose of this presentation is to educate psychotherapists about the special needs adults. It will offer suggestions about ways to communicate with these challenged adults as well as ways to maximize their ability to achieve independence and to live within their communities. The presenter will share material from her personal and professional experiences. A visit to L.A. GOAL will be arranged for any student or other professional who is interested. L.A. GOAL staff and members were instrumental in the production of “I am Sam”. Dr. Dasteel is a doctoral graduate of the Sanville Institute.

Objectives:

  • To recognize and understand the cognitive difficulties experienced by adults with developmental disabilities.
  • To list a group of ways that adults with developmental disabilities may function “normally” in many areas of their lives, while needing help and support from others.
  • To develop ways of talking with individuals with special needs to maximize their understanding of their situation and augment their cooperation in their own care.
  • To recognize when it is necessary to incorporate family members to assist in the treatment process, and how to deal with issues of patient cooperation and confidentiality.
  • To augment the learning experience by a site visit to L.A. GOAL, where the student and other professional will meet special needs adults and staff members in this unique program.

The Sherman Oaks Galleria is located at 15301 Ventura Blvd. (Intersection of 101 and 405 freeways and corner of Ventura and Sepulveda). The Community Room is located on the 1st floor near the Cheesecake Factory and past Paul Mitchell Salon, and ATM.
