Course Description:

Compassion can be considered to be the capacity to attend to the experience of others, to sense what will serve others. Along with kindness, these pro-social modes of being are now being studied extensively by neuroscience and social psychology and the results, along with age old contemplative practices, have combined to have major implications for the psychotherapeutic situation. Using a combination of didactic, experiential and contemplative approaches, we will learn to apply:1. Neuroscience of compassion based interventions; 2. Learn methods that can avoid burnout and decrease stress in the therapist; 3. Explore how training clients in self-compassion and compassion toward others can be a powerful therapeutic tool.
