Title: Self-Management And Recovery Training (SMART): Self-empowering support groups for addictions and other compulsive behaviors

Presenter: William Brock, Ph.D.,  SMART Recovery Facilitator and Advisory Board Member

SMART Recovery (SR) is an international non-profit organization offering free, self-empowering, science based support groups (both face-to-face and on-line) to help individuals abstaining from addictive substances or behaviors. Dr. William Brock, a psychologist in the San Diego area, who is also a SR facilitator, will present an overview of SR. SMART represents an alternative to 12-step programs for individuals struggling with addictive and compulsive behaviors. Dr. Brock will describe the basic principles of SMART Recovery, why SR can be an important complement or alternative to 12-step programs, and the basics of becoming a SR volunteer facilitator or host. The 4-point SR program will be described, including building and maintaining motivation; coping with urges; managing thoughts, feelings and behavior; and living a balanced lifestyle. Some of the SR tools and coping strategies will be presented, with opportunities to briefly practice several of the tools.  Dr. Brock will summarize the on-line resources available through SR, including on-line support groups and training. The SR program for family and friends will also be described.

As usual, our meeting will be held on the first Thursday of the month, January 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 at the new Jewish Family Service building, 8788 Balboa Avenue (adjacent to the 8804 building) in Kearny Mesa. The meeting will begin with a half hour of mingling, networking, and community building, followed by our program. This program meets the requirements for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs as specified by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences; CEUs are FREE to our members, $15 for non-members.

Please contact Ros Goldstein, goldsiegel@gmail.com, to reserve your seat.
