THE NEUROBIOLOGY OF TRAUMA

  • Sunday, December 13, 2015
  • 9:30 AM - 12:15 PM
  • The Sherman Oaks Galleria Community Room

Joyce E. Smith, MA, LMFT is a certified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) therapist  as well as a trained TRM (Trauma Resiliency Model - a somatic based therapy) therapist working with clients for the past 8 years and specializing in PTSD and trauma for the past 5 years.  She developed a course suggesting a correlation between Trauma and Addiction which was presented at One80Center, an inpatient addiction facility.  Although not a neurobiologist, Joyce Smith is a sexual assault survivor herself, and she discovered some of the neurobiological underpinnings of PTSD which helped to alleviate the shame and guilt associated with this trauma.  She found the healing through EMDR and TRM therapy which was life changing for her.  With a profound understanding of this experience and knowledge of the healing needed, she has grown passionate about helping others alleviate the suffering experienced from trauma.  Joyce E. Smith has a private practice in Hollywood and works with adults, adolescents and children.  She can be reached at 323 333-4462 or joycesmithmft@gmail.com.

This presentation is a basic introduction to how our physiology is impacted by an overwhelming event.  Long after the event has occurred, there can be long lasting effects that continue to linger and obstruct normal functioning.  When that occurs, the culprit is most likely a civilian form of PTSD which effects our cognition and hijacks our inherent survival mechanisms and our autonomic nervous system.  Seemingly innocent things can trigger an abnormally strong reaction.  This presentation will help to understand some of the associated  neurobiology of trauma.  It will become clear that the ‘over reaction’ is really a series of events the brain and the nervous system have tied into one giant DANGER ALERT.  Under these DANGER activated times, there are some simple techniques to help the client calm their nervous system.  This Introduction will show  how some EMDR and TRM techniques can help to heal  the client with PTSD.

Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to

  • Learn the definition of “neurobiology” as it relates to trauma and the autonomic nervous system.
  • Compare the 2 ways our brains encode trauma
  • Learn 3 possible treatments for trauma-affected clients
  • Participate in 3 calming exercises to settle the participant’s nervous system
