"Bereaved Military Families: Supporting Resilience in the Face of Veteran Suicide"

Overview:
A resilience-based approach to military families coping with unique grief reactions to veteran suicide will be presented. Examples of how social work clinicians can adapt solution-focused and narrative techniques with a bereaved military family will be delineated.
Goals and Objectives:
1) Participants will be able to describe how to apply solution-focused and narrative perspectives with a veteran family that will enhance the family’s resilience by providing new meanings and interpretations of grief responses.
2) Participants will learn methods of addressing survivor guilt and sense of responsibility in their clients in the aftermath of veteran suicide.
3 ) Participants will be able to formulate solution-focused and narrative therapeutic questions to be used with bereaved families to promote healing and resilience.
About the Presenter:
Eugenia L. Weiss, PsyD, LCSW is a bilingual-bicultural (Spanish) California licensed clinical social worker and licensed psychologist. Weiss maintained a private practice for 18 years. Her research interests include cultural diversity and trauma as it relates to veterans, military personnel and their families. She is the author of multiple peer reviewed journal publications and is co-author of a book titled: "A Civilian Counselor's Primer to Counseling Veterans," (2nd edition). Additionally, Dr. Weiss is co-editor and author of a textbook titled "Handbook for Military Social Work" published by Wiley & Sons.
This course meets the qualifications for 1.5hrs of CE credit for LCSWs, LMFTs, and LPCCs as required by the CA BBS. PCE #1
