"Clinical Social Work Practice in Non Clinical Settings"

Overview: My hypothesis is that the use of clinical social work skills in non-clinical settings can improve client outcomes and social worker job satisfaction. Clinical social work intervention is not restricted to social workers who practice psychotherapy, either within an agency setting, or in private practice. In this workshop participants will learn how to apply clinical social work knowledge, values and skills when providing social work services in non-clinical settings.
Goals/ Objectives:
Upon completions of this workshop participants will be able to:
1) Describe 3 components of a clinical case formulation in a non-clinical setting.
2) List 2 clinical social work skills that can be used in non-clinical settings
3) List 2 benefits that clients may experience as a result of clinical social work interventions in non-clinical settings.
4) List 2 potential barriers to implementing the use of clinical social work skills in non-clinical settings.
About the Presenter:
John maintains a private practice in the Pill Hill section of Oakland and he is also social worker, Chronic Pain Management and Functional Restoration Program at Alameda Health Systems, Highland campus. John holds clinical social work licenses in CA, NY, WA and British Columbia, Canada. He completed a Two Year Post Masters Certificate Program in Advanced Clinical Social Work – Individual Psychodynamic Therapy concentration in 2000 at City University of New York-Hunter College School of Social Work, New York, NY. He obtained his MSW with a concentration in health and mental health in 1990 from Walla Walla University, College Place, WA. He also holds certifications in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety in Children and Youth, Critical Incident Stress Management and Social Work Field Instruction. He is an approved supervisor for pre-licensed masters level therapists in California and Washington State. John has worked in healthcare (inpatient/outpatient-medicine/psychiatry), child protective services, homeless services and community mental health.
In May 2014, John presented “Coming Out Twice: Psychotherapy with LGBT couples and singles raised in conservative religions” at the first annual Contemporary Couples Conference in Austin, TX. John has been a guest lecturer to social work classes both in person and electronically at Columbia University, NY; Atlantic Union College, MA, Oakwood College, AL and Northern Arizona University, AZ. He also lectured in the outpatient General Medicine Residency Training Program at Beth Israel Medical Center, NY. John is a fan of the Syfy network and HGTV.
This course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Members earn credits at no cost. Credits for non-members are $10.00 per unit. All are welcome to attend at no charge (no CEU certificate). MSW students are especially encouraged to attend.
